Music video

The music video for Born to Die premiered on December 20, 2011 on Del Rey's YouTube channel. In the music video, Del Rey can be seen with American model and actor Bradley Soileau. Del Rey accepted Soileau, who plays her fictional boyfriend, because he reminded her of her ex-boyfriend, whom she was also thinking about while writing the concept for the music video. Del Rey wrote the concept under the title The Lonely Queen . The total length of the video is 4:45 minutes. Directed by Woodkid . To date, the video has over 459 million views on YouTube (as of October 2019).

The video starts with Del Rey and Soileau, naked torsos, hugging against the backdrop of the US flag. The next scene shows Del Rey leaving home to take her boyfriend on a trip in the car. Before they leave, they make out and smoke marijuana together . While driving, their relationship seems unstable when Del Rey is forced by her boyfriend to kiss him. During the trip, intercuts can be seen in which the two stay in a hotel and can be seen lying on the bed together. In one shot, Soileau grabs his girlfriend threateningly by the neck while she sleeps. When Del Rey tries to leave the hotel, the scene ends and a car accident sequence follows in a new scene. Soileau stands in the foreground of a burning car with the blood-smeared, supposedly dead Del Rey in his arms. Previously, Del Rey had walked in a white dress through a corridor in a castle (like a tunnel) until she came to a gate that opened. Throughout the video, there are repeated excerpts in which Del Rey sits on a kind of throne in the middle of Fontainebleau Castle , protected by a tiger on the right and left. The video ends with the opening scene.
