Dark Paradise ( English for 'Dark Paradise') is a song by the American pop singer Lana Del Rey . The track is the eighth and final single from their second studio album Born to Die .

Creation and artwork

The song was written by Lana Del Rey and Rick Nowels . The single was produced by Emile Haynie, co-produced by Devrim Karaoglu and Rick Nowels. The single was mastered by Metropolis Mastering in London , under the direction of the British John Davis. The song was mixed by the Guatemalan sound engineer Manny Marroquin together with the assistants Chris Galland and Erik Madrid. Next to Del Rey, the Spanish singer María Vidal can be heard in the background . The instrumentalists were Emile Haynie as keyboard player and drummer, Devrim Karaoglu on drums and synthesizer, Rick Nowels as guitarist and Dean Reid on pads. The string instrumentalists were arranged and conducted by Larry Gold. The song was released under the music labels EMI and Vertigo Records . On the cover of the maxi singles you can see - next to the inscription of the artist and the song title - Del Rey on a sun lounger.

Publication and promotion

In an interview with Radio 1's Fearne Cotton on June 21, 2012, Del Rey said she had no plans to release Dark Paradise as a single, but would like to make a music video for the song. Exactly the opposite was the case, a year later she released Dark Paradise as a single, but did not make a music video for it.

The single was first released on March 1, 2013 as a download and CD in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The maxi single is available as a 2-track single and contains the album and radio version of the song. A remix version of Parov Stelar was also released as a single download. It was released in Australia and the rest of Europe two months later on May 10, 2013 as a download single.

Dark Paradise did not appear live on the radio or radio in Germany, Austria or Switzerland to this day. She only played the song live at her concerts.

The song divides many music critics into two camps. Some consider Dark Paradise to be one of the bad tracks on Born to Die , others praise the song as one of the best. The US Billboard magazine rated the piece as follows:

David Edwards of the online music magazine Drowned in Sound described Dark Paradise along with Carmen as the two worst pieces on the album. BBC Music's Jaime Gill said Dark Paradise is one of the reasons the album is not perfect. Compared to other tracks on the album, the song sags.

The Los Angeles Times honored the song along with Video Games and Summertime Sadness as the highlight of the album. CCN.com describes Dark Paradise along with Million Dollar Man as the best pieces on the album.
