Mariners Apartment Complex ( English for " Mariners Apartment Complex ") is a song by the American pop singer Lana Del Rey . The track is the first single from her sixth studio album Norman Fucking Rockwell .
Creation and artwork
Was written the song by Lana Del Rey, US American in collaboration with the guitarist of the indie pop - band fun. , Jack Antonoff. The instrumentalization (mellotron, piano, synthesizer and twelve-string guitar) as well as the production was done by Antonoff, while Del Rey was at his side as co-producer. "The song is about this time I took a walk late at night with a guy I was seeing, and we stopped in front his friend's apartment complex, and he put his hand around my shoulder, and he said," I think we are together because we're both similar, like we're both really messed up, ”and I thought it was the saddest thing I'd ever heard. And I said, "I'm not sad, I didn't know that's why you thought you were relating to me on that level, I'm actually doing pretty good." And he was upset, and that's when I wrote the song. I thought, I had to do [that] so many times, where I had to sort of step on that role where I was showing the way and I was sort of being the brighter light. But that's why it's so cool that you're playing it. 'Cause I thought that I'd just put it out and it would be one of those things that I'd put out just to have there for myself, but it's cool being able to share it with people too.

The black and white music video for Mariners Apartment Complex was filmed on July 13, 2018 in Los Angeles (United States) and premiered on YouTube on September 12, 2018 . At the beginning of the video you can see a long scene of a swell . Then you see Del Rey with her two band members Alexandria Kaye and Ashley Rodriguez, who play with a butterfly. In between there are also scenes in which Del Rey moves alone and sings the song. You can see them in front of a highway or a substation . In the middle of the video there is another long swell scene before Del Rey and her two band members can be seen again. The video ends with another longer scene of the swell. Del Rey's scenes are reminiscent of a Super 8 film . The total length of the video is 4:18 minutes. Directed by Del Rey's younger sister, Caroline “Chuck” Grant. To date, the music video has over 13.9 million views on YouTube (as of February 2019).

Rolling Stone's Brittany Spanos says the song feels like a "spiritual sequel" to Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel No. 2 feel. At the end of the year Rolling Stone placed the song in sixth position in their "50 Best Songs of 2018".
Lindsay Teske from the US online magazine Consequence of Sound described Mariners Apartment Complex as a "delicate and poetic act of rebellion". At the end of the year, the online magazine placed the song in 29th position in its “50 Best Songs of 2018”.
