background information

At Lust for Life is already the fourth collaboration between Del Rey and The Weeknd within three years. The two worked together for the first time in 2015 for Weekend's second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness . This resulted in the song Prisoner which reached the charts in the United Kingdom and the United States due to high download numbers. The following year, the two worked again for Weeknd's third studio album, Starboy . This resulted in the pieces Party Monster and Stargirl Interlude . At Party Monster , Del Rey is not listed as an official guest singer, but she can be heard in the background and co-wrote the song. Party Monster was released as a single and enjoyed worldwide chart success. The song Stargirl Interlude was not released as a single, but also made it into the British and US single charts through high download numbers. In an interview, Del Rey stated that The Weeknd added so much to the song that it was the perfect song for him to support her. This is Del Rey's first collaboration in which she is the main act.

In an interview with Courtney Love for Dazed Magazine, Del Rey revealed that Lust for Life went through several phases before she was satisfied with the outcome. It was like a Rubik's cube . She felt it was a "big" song, but it wasn't the right one yet. Max Martin told her that he found the stanzas the strongest and that he wanted to hear them more often. Then Del Rey came up with the idea to make this the chorus, which was revised a bit by The Weeknd. Thinking about The Weeknd singing the chorus, Del Rey missed the Shangri-Las element a bit , so she had to sit down and work on the piece a fourth time. She layered the song with more harmonies before she was satisfied with the result. Usually Del Rey doesn't go back and edit / change so many things because the songs end up the way they're supposed to be. But she had to lend a hand again on the piece. Del Rey also mentioned that Lust for Life was the first track that was created for the upcoming album.

content

The lyrics to Lust for Life are in English; Translated into German, the title means "lust for life". As the title describes, the content is about the “lust for life”, “love” and the “ most beautiful thing in the world ”. The music and lyrics were written jointly by Lana Del Rey, Max Martin, Rick Nowels and Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd). Musically, the song moves in the realm of synth pop and pop music . The tempo is 100 beats per minute . The instrumentalists are David Levita (electric guitar), Kieron Menzies (drums), Mighty Mike (bongos), Rick Nowels (keyboard, mellotron and piano), Ali Payami (drums), Zac Rae (synthesizer) and Dean Reid (bass guitar, Percussion, drums, sound effects, synthesizers and vocoders).

The piece is built on two stanzas and a bridge as well as a hook line and a refrain between the stanzas, the bridge and at the end of the song. The first verse and hook line are sung by Del Rey alone, The Weekend joins the first chorus for the first time. The second stanza begins with Del Rey, and The Weekend joins in the middle. This is followed by a hookline that is interpreted by Weeknd alone. From the subsequent second chorus, the two sing all parts together. During the solo performances, each other's voices can be heard in the background.

"Take off, take off ...
take off all of your clothes.
They say only the good die young.
That just ain't right,
'cause we're having too much fun.
Too much fun tonight, yeah. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

"Take off, take off ... take
off all your clothes.
They say that only the good die young.
That's not right
because we're having too much fun.
Too much fun tonight, yes. "

- Refrain, translation
