Shades of Cool ( English for 'shades of cool' in the sense of "serenity" or "indifference") is a song by the American pop singer Lana Del Rey . The piece is the second single from their third studio album Ultraviolence .

The music and lyrics for Shades of Cool were co-written by Lana Del Rey and Rick Nowels . The text, written entirely in English, deals with an unrequited love. The composition is in the key of D minor and counts 46 beats per minute . Del Rey's voice ranges from A 3 to B 5 . The pop song borrows heavily from easy listening and surf .

Was produced Shades of Cool of Dan Auerbach , who is also on the electric guitar  can be heard. The arrangement and programming of the drum computer was done by Collin Dupuis. The recording was mastered by Metropolis Mastering in London and mixed at Hot Rocks Studios. The song was released under the music labels Interscope Records , Polydor and Vertigo / Capitol and distributed through EMI Music Publishing . On 26 May 2014, the song was as Download - Single decoupled. The accompanying black and white cover picture shows Del Rey's torso in front of a row of trees. It was shot by the American photographer Neil Krug.

Music video

Shades of Cool was filmed in Los Angeles in May 2014 and premiered on June 17, 2014 on Del Rey's YouTube account. Del Rey presented a teaser on Instagram on June 12, 2014 . As in the previous music video for West Coast , the tattoo artist Mark Mahoney can be seen again in the video alongside Del Rey. The total length of the video is 4:26 minutes. Directed by Jake Nava . To date, the video has over 29 million clicks on YouTube (as of September 2015).

The video starts with Mahoney looking into the camera before driving a car through the streets of LA. This is followed by a view of the skyline as the image fades and Del Rey can be seen. Alternating excerpts from Del Rey and Mahoney follow. In the second verse, Del Rey walks the streets of LA and watches Mahoney get into his car. This ignores them and drives away. In the next scene, he's sitting in front of a swimming pool while Del Rey swims by in the background. Then she dances in front of him in the living room while he has a drink. Del Rey then eats a strawberry, has a drink and smokes in the pool. In another scene, the two playfully hug and dance together. Towards the end, Del Rey leaves the pool with a reference to Marilyn Monroe in Something's Got to Give . The video ends with Mahoney throwing a happy Del Rey to the ground after a long, intimate hug.

Consequence of Sound described the composition as a "slow and somewhat dark ballad, noticeable through reverberant guitars, the slight atmosphere and Del Rey's vocals, which fluctuates between muffled whispers and ephemeral wailing". The Billboard magazine called the piece a "sweeping, atmospheric ballad that contrasts with the pop-oriented predecessors West Coast represents". Rolling Stone's Calyn Ganz wrote that Shades of Cool would be a perfect match for a James Bond film directed by Quentin Tarantino .

MTV's John Wigler called the song "50 Shades of Great" based on the book Shades of Gray . Chris Coplan of Consequence of Sound appreciates the song for its "grace and elegance". Sarah Shetty of Slate called Shades of Cool a "beautiful, brooding return to the former Del Rey" and compares it positively to her previous single West Coast .

Shades of Cool reached position 43 in the single charts in Switzerland and stayed in the charts for a week. In the United States, the single also reached position 79 in the single charts in one week. For Del Rey as an interpreter, this is the tenth chart success in Switzerland and the fifth in the United States. For Del Rey as a writer, this is the ninth chart success in Switzerland and the fifth in the United States.
