Kirwan 1970, with Fleetwood Mac

Daniel David "Danny" Kirwan (born May 13, 1950 in Brixton , south London , † June 8, 2018 in London, England) was a British musician. He was one of the guitarists , songwriters and vocalists in the band Fleetwood Mac from 1969 to 1972 .

Life

In 1967 the guitarist Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac became aware of the then 17-year-old Danny Kirwan and his guitar technique at a concert by the Boilerhouse band. Boilerhouse then played a few concerts with the already established Fleetwood Mac. Though the rest of the band wasn't entirely convinced, drummer Mick Fleetwood Kirwan offered membership in August 1968. Fleetwood Mac became a band with three guitarists, alongside Green and Kirwan , Jeremy Spencer, who played primarily slide guitar .

The first recording with Kirwan was the UK number one hit Albatross . On the album Then Play On , released in mid-1969, Kirwan shared almost half the songwriting duties with Green and was almost as often heard as a singer. Despite the musical closeness, personal distancing occurred, which led to Green leaving the band in the spring of 1970.

During his band membership with Fleetwood Mac, Kirwan went into psychiatric treatment for alcohol and drug abuse and was released from the band in 1972 because of both these problems and his temper. Mick Fleetwood was the only member of the band who still spoke to him at the time. Kirwan then released three solo albums: Chapter Two (1975), Midnight In San Juan (1976) and finally Hello There Big Boy! (1979). His mental health deteriorated at this time, so that he was no longer musically active and at times homeless.

He was married between 1971 and 1976 and had one son.

Like several other British blues rock guitarists of the period, Kirwan preferred to play a few copies of the Gibson Les Paul Standard.

Mick Fleetwood reported on his Facebook page that Danny Kirwan died on June 8, 2018 at the age of 68.
