designation

At the same time as the designation of locomotive types at Gmeinder, which was being phased out at the end of the 1960s - based solely on their power or performance class as with the V 12-16 - at that time a type designation was already being used as a combination of drive type, power class and wheel arrangement, such as for the D. 15 B, D 25 B and D 35 B introduced. However, this designation was then continued unchanged even for major new designs within the respective performance class. The juxtaposition of designations went so far that even one and the same locomotive with two different type designations appears in the literature, so the two machines delivered to Togo are said to have already been designated as D 15 B in the brochure . There is no official delivery list from Gmeinder.

technology

The locomotive consisted of a very stable frame made of sheet metal and had a MAN six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 6,660 cm³. Power was transmitted to the axles diesel-hydraulically via cardan shafts. The wheelset bearings were designed with metal-rubber frames.

Externally, the locomotives supplied for narrower gauges differ in that they have a narrow driver's cab and a narrower buffer beam. The machines supplied with the drawing number PL 20231 for the Jagst Valley Railway had a pneumatic multiple control and could be used in double traction. The locomotives were always coupled to the driver's cab for reasons of cooling air supply.

Deliveries

In 1965, at the same time as the first V 12-16 delivered to Hibernia Chemie in Herne under the serial number 5362, two more machines with the serial numbers 5363 and 5364 as DH 6 and DH 7 were made by the Steffen & Co brothers, AFRIC Consulting GmbH, Stuttgart for the STIESO Societé Togolais d'Installation et d'Equipement de second Oeuvre SARL, Lomé [Togo] completed and delivered to the state railway Chemin de fer du Togo CFT in a gauge of 1000 mm.

The fourth machine of this type with the serial number 5369 was delivered to an industrial company in Mannheim / Rheinau in early 1966.

In the same year, the locomotives with the serial numbers 5413 and 5414 went to the Südwestdeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (SWEG) as V 22 01 and V 22 02 with a gauge of 750 mm for their narrow-gauge railway in the Jagst Valley .

In 1968, two more locomotives with a gauge of 1435 mm followed to Stadtwerke München for their subway . They were manufactured under the serial numbers 5445 and 5446 and entered service as "8901" and 8902 ".

Under the designation D 15 B three machines were delivered from 1969 to 1980. Only the first of these with the serial number 5412 is largely the same as the V 12-16, the later deliveries show changes, as they were also incorporated into the design of the Gmeinder D 25 B in the course of the delivery time, which spanned over four decades. The first D 15 B in an explosion-proof design was sold to Austria and initially ranked number 2 in the Petro-Chemie refinery, Groß Schwechat at Vienna Airport.

The first in Herne remains unchanged at its original location, only the owner has changed several times and was last called Evonik.

One of the two machines delivered to Togo was still active in the port of the capital Lome in 2001 and shunted a Deutz locomotive for loading for transport back to its original place of use on the Selfkantbahn. The West African cement company (WACEM, formerly Cimtogo) took over the route from the eastern port in Lomé via Agbalépédogan and Togblékové to Tabligbo in 2002 and is operated by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Services). At least one of the Gmeinder locomotives will continue to be in use in Tabligbo in 2007 for shunting purposes.

The Mannheim factory locomotive is said to have been scrapped at a locomotive dealer in Westphalia in 2014.

In 1965, both SWEG locomotives took over all freight traffic on the Jagsttalbahn . Light trains with up to six standard gauge wagons jacked up could be driven by one locomotive alone, while heavier trains weighing up to 600 t were carried in double traction . In operational service, the double covering was then given the name Jagsttalkrokodil . Both locomotives received an exchange engine around 1980 and were handed over to the Jagsttalbahn AG Museum Railway Association, Dörzbach, in 2002. One of them is on loan to the Öchsle narrow-gauge railway .

The last two machines to be delivered to the Munich subway were sold to a dealer in Switzerland at the end of the 1990s and gauged to 1000 mm at Gmeinder. They are still in use for the Swiss track construction company Furrer + Frey.

The copy delivered to Austria as D 15 B went to the Museumbahn Nostalgiebahnen in Carinthia (NbiK) as early as 1991 and supports the steam trains between Weizelsdorf and Ferlach im Rosental with the fictitious number "2061 201" .
