Dion and the Belmonts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dion and the Belmonts were an American pop music group from the late 1950s that shaped the doo-wop style. Her greatest successes were A Teenager in Love , Where or When and When You Wish upon a Star .

history

The singer Dion DiMucci and the accompanying band The Belmonts (cast: Angelo D'Aleo (tenor), Fred Milano (tenor) and Carlo Mastrangelo (baritone)), who already knew each other from school, did each other under the name Dion for two years in 1957 and the Belmonts together.

Her mix of Doo-Wop and R&B quickly brought her into the charts: her first single - at the same time the first single from the record label Laurie Records , founded in 1958 - I Wonder Why reached number 22. After the following No One Knows (# 19, written by Ernie Maresca ) and Don't Pity Me (# 40) then came their biggest hit A Teenager in Love (# 5 in 1959). Where or When (# 3 1960) and When You Wish upon a Star cemented their popularity. In 1959 Angelo D'Aleo was drafted into the Navy, which made it difficult to perform together and work in the recording studio. In 1960 Dion separated from the Belmonts due to musical differences. While the Belmonts preferred soft harmonies, Dion felt more committed to rock'n'roll.

From 1960 Dion tried his hand at being a solo artist and had five consecutive top ten hits, such as B. Runaround Sue and The Wanderer . The Belmonts also recorded more songs for various labels over the years, but they were denied great success. In 1961 Tell Me Why made it to number 18 in the US charts and in 1962 Come On Little Angel to number 28.

Dion and the Belmonts reunited for some recordings in 1967, which were released as an album under the title Together Again . The two single releases Mr. Movin 'Man and Berimbau were unsuccessful. In 1972 there was a one-time musical reunion with the Belmonts in New York's Madison Square Garden . Excerpts from the concert were released in 1973 on the LP Reunion .
