The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage (February 1974 ) is Peter Hammill's third solo album . As on the previous album Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night , Hammill recorded some of the pieces single-handedly in his private studio Sofa Sound ; the rest was created with the help of his former Van der Graaf generator colleagues, including the epic A Louse Is Not a Home , which he originally wrote for this band in 1972 and which was incorporated into their live repertoire after their reformation in 1974.

Guitarist Randy California of the American band Spirit also played the song Red Shift .
