biography

Dave Swarbrick, 1970s

In the 1950s Swarbrick first began to learn the piano , but soon switched to fiddle. He gained his first group experience at the Beryl Marriott Ceilidh Group towards the end of the decade. In the 1960s he played with Ian Campbell, Martin Carthy and AL Lloyd, among others , until he released his solo debut Rags, Reels & Airs in 1967 . In 1969 he played as a guest musician at Fairport Conventions Unhalfbricking , where he became a permanent member in 1970 and stayed for nine years. In addition, Swarbrick continued to release solo albums and participated in several recordings by Martin Carthy.

In 1979 he turned his back on the Fairport Convention, as electric music had meanwhile made him hard of hearing. In the early 1980s Swarbrick toured with Simon Nicol , with whom he also recorded two LPs: Live at the White Bear was released in 1981, Close to the Wind in 1984.

On his 50th birthday, Swarbrick put on a concert at Birmingham Town Hall with bands and musicians he'd played with once. Parts of the concert were released in 1996 under the title Folk on 2 . In the same year, Swarbricks began working with ex- Roaring Jack frontman Alistair Hulett. Also in 1996 Swarbrick began working with Pete Hawkes.
