Peter Whitehead (filmmaker)

Peter Lorrimer Whitehead (born January 8, 1937 in Liverpool - † June 10, 2019 in London ) was an English filmmaker and writer who documented the counterculture of the swinging sixties in London and New York .

biography

Whitehead grew up in a modest family. As a good student, he received scholarships that enabled him to get a good education and study. After studying science in Cambridge , he moved to the Slade School of Fine Art in London to study art and film.

In his films he documented the counterculture of the late 1960s in London and New York. He also made commercials for musical groups such as Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones , precursors to the later music videos .

In 1969 Whitehead left the film business, moved to Morocco and started working as a falconer . After that he made only a few films.

From the 1990s onwards Whitehead published several books, including novels.

In 1997 Iain Sinclair directed the semi-fictional documentary The Falconer about Whitehead in collaboration with filmmaker Chris Petit, sculptor Steve Dilworth and others .

In 2006 Paul Cronin put together the two-part documentary "In the Beginning Was the Image: Conversations With Peter Whitehead".

Whitehead died on June 10, 2019 at the age of 82.
