The Premier League Darts is a tournament series in darts that has been held by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) since 2005 . In the first year she ran with 888.com as a sponsor under the name 888.com Premier League , the following two years as Holsten Premier League Darts and from 2008 as Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts . In 2011 they returned to the original sponsor 888.com. In 2012 the tournament was sponsored by the savory biscuit manufacturer McCoy's. In 2014 the sponsor was changed again, from then on it was the sports betting provider Betway. The Premier League Darts has been sponsored by Unibet since 2018 .

The Premier League is next to the world championship the most popular darts tournament of the year, for which only the best players of the PDC qualify. In addition to the top 4 players in the Order of Merit, the PDC will award six wild cards, which will result in a field of ten players. The Premier League always starts in the first quarter of the year and is played over several weeks. In the first four years, Phil Taylor won the Premier League and was unbeaten in 44 games.

Parts of the Premier League will be broadcast live on German television on Sport1 and Sport1 +. The Premier League will be broadcast online on the DAZN streaming service. For subscribers outside Great Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands, the tournament can be followed in the PDC livestream.

The venues are different cities across Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands and, since 2018, Germany.

format

Eight players took part up to 2012 and ten players since 2013. The group stage consists of two phases. During the first nine game days, each player meets each other once. The players in the last two places after the ninth matchday, the so-called Judgment Night , receive the corresponding prize money and have to leave the Premier League. The remaining eight players each play against each other one more time. After a total of 16 match days, the first four places are certain. In the 16th and last week of the Premier League, the playoffs take place as semi-finals and finals. In the semifinals, the first and fourth as well as the second and third of the previous table meet. The two winners then contest the Premier League final.

Prize money

The professionals played in 2016, as well as the year before, for a prize money of 200,000 pounds for the win. In total, prize money of £ 700,000 plus £ 25,000 bonus will be played out for the final leader.
