Mykola Fedorowytsch Tschernjawskyj (born December 22, 1867 July / January 3,  1868 greg. In Schachowe , Yekaterinoslav Governorate , Russian Empire ; † January 19, 1938 in Cherson , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian writer , educator and activist .

Life

Mykola Tschernjawskyj was born into a priestly family in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Donetsk . In 1889 he graduated from the theological seminar in Yekaterinoslav and then taught at a church school in Bachmut . His first known poems come from this time. From 1901 to 1903 he worked as a statistician in Chernihiv and then until 1919 in the government administration in Cherson . From 1919 he worked again as a teacher in Kherson. During the Soviet rule he was no longer very active in literature and after 1933 he no longer published. Later his writings were banned and he was politically persecuted. On 14 October 1937 he was arrested on 27 November 1937 the Troika of the NKVD sentenced to death and shot on 19 January 1938th After the death of Josef Stalin , he was rehabilitated in 1956 and a few short collections were published by him. However, he continued to be accused of Ukrainian nationalism by Soviet critics.

Tschernjawskyj published several collections of poetry, the lyrical poetry of which is rich in themes, but also contains many love poems influenced by Taras Shevchenko and Ukrainian folklore . His historical poems were devoted to the Cossack period, especially the era of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj .
