Ferocactus townsendianus is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Ferocactus townsendianus grows individually with cylindrical shoots , sometimes tapering towards the tip, and reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters with a diameter of 30 centimeters. There are about 16 high and slightly tuberous ribs , which are often arranged in a spiral. The three to four gray or brown, straight or slightly curved central spines are arranged crosswise and up to 10 centimeters long. The three upper central spines are ascending, the lowest is flattened with a strongly curved or hook-shaped tip. The radial spines radiating from 14 to 15 are occasionally curled. The bottom three sometimes resemble the central spines.
The funnel-shaped flowers are yellow with a red central stripe and a red base, or orange-red or red. They reach a length of 5 to 6 centimeters and have the same diameter. The 2 to 2.5 centimeters long, yellow fruits are spherical.
distribution
Ferocactus townsendianus is distributed in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur including the islands of San José and Santa Margarita and Magdalena .
Botanical history
The first description was in 1922 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . The name honors Charles Haskins Townsend , who, as director of the New York Aquarium, led the research trip during which the first specimen of the species was collected. This type specimen was found on March 15, 1911 by JN Rose on San José in the Gulf of California .
