The Isla Santa Margarita is a Mexican island in the Pacific Ocean .
It is located a few kilometers off the west coast of the southern part of the peninsula Baja California and part of the state of Baja California Sur . It represents the southernmost territory of the municipality of Comondú . Within the municipality of Comondú, the island belongs to the delegación Puerto San Carlos . The island has an area of 231 km², its coastline is about 96 km and its highest point measures 610 meters. Santa Margarita is part of the Comondú municipality.
The only place on the island is Puerto Cortés, which has 128 inhabitants and is located roughly in the middle of the east coast. There is a small base of the Mexican Navy there, otherwise the only source of income is fishing.
The Isla Santa Margarita, together with its northern neighbor island Isla Magdalena and some smaller islands and sandbanks , closes the Bahía Magdalena lagoon from the open ocean; this is known, among other things, as a mating site for gray whales and a habitat for numerous sea birds.
