The 1979 feature film Home Among Strangers by Peter Keglevic and Renke Korn was Herbert Grönemeyer's first major television appearance . The film is also an early contribution to the topic of Turkish immigrants in Germany .

Bernd meets Ayshe, of Turkish origin, who came to Germany as a child, and falls in love with her. Ayshe feels more at home in Germany than in Turkey, but through her relationship with Bernd she realizes that this does not apply to her parents. They are against the relationship and are preparing a wedding in their old homeland. Ultimately, Ayshe has to choose between her family and Bernd. She breaks with her family and stays in Berlin.
