Meray Ülgen

Meray Ülgen (* 1941 in Akşehir ) is in Germany working theater maker and cartoonist of Turkish origin. The actor , director , author and founder of several play groups and venues was of central importance for the development of the German-Turkish theater scene in the Federal Republic of Germany .

Life

Ülgen spent childhood and youth in Istanbul. At the local short film festival in 1970 he won first prize. The actor has lived in Germany since 1972. As a cartoonist, he had a. a. Exhibitions in Berlin and Cologne . In addition, he was involved in almost all the important German-Turkish theater and ensemble foundations in the republic, e. B. Berlin Oyuncuları (German: Berliner Darsteller, 1976), the Turkish Ensemble of the Schaubühne Berlin (where he was also seen as an actor in the world premiere of Botho Strauss Groß und Klein , of which a film was also released) or more recently Zeit dem Wuppertheater (1991), which no longer only shows German-Turkish, but intercultural theater. As a theater director, Ülgen also reformed the Tiyatrom (German: My Theater), which, founded in 1983, was the first permanent Turkish theater stage in German-speaking countries.

As a playwright, Ülgen, who was inspired by Brecht, wrote numerous plays for both children and adults. In the children's theater works , which are often conceived as “hands-on pieces”, the German language is predominant; for adults, Ülgen writes primarily in Turkish. The author staged a large part of his plays himself, e.g. B. Courage (1981), Once upon a time, there was never a time (1987), The Wolf, the Lambs and the Seven Little Goats (1991), Nasrettin Hoca and his Donkey (last version 1996), or Keloglan / Der Taugenasst (last version 1996).

As an actor, Meray Ülgen appeared in a number of feature films and television productions in supporting roles, including in the comedy Süperseks directed by Torsten Wacker and the Schimanski Tatort Duisburg Ruhrort 1981, directed by Hajo Gies . Ülgen had guest appearances in the comedy series Hausmeister Krause and Alles Atze . Ülgen played one of the leading roles in the German-Turkish cinema production Takva - Gottesfurcht (2006), which was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale 2007 . As early as 1979 he had a large-scale TV role with Herbert Grönemeyer in Home Among Strangers , a joint production by SFB and ORF. In 2008 he is in Evet, I want! to see.

As a cartoonist, Ülgen has recently drawn a. a. for the German-Turkish humor magazine Don Quichotte . But Titanic magazine also published four of his cartoons in its February 2007 issue. Ülgen also illustrated various books.
