Herz is the title of a German film drama from 2001 that was released internationally under the title Heart . Directed by Horst Sczerba , who also wrote the script. Herz is an ensemble film that shows people of different ages who are in different ways in problematic relationships, with which they deal in just as different ways.
action
The film takes place against the backdrop of Cologne. A diving school is the crossing point of the stories told. There a clique of the small district meets in a diving school to switch off from everyday life and to gain distance from the problems that each individual carries around with them. One of them is Martin who works as a doctor. The film begins with the suicide attempt of a young woman who Martin can barely save from death. However, the attempt to contact her after her awakening fails. The girl remains silent and the reason why she wanted to kill herself remains hidden from the ambitious doctor.
Georg, who works for the homicide squad , is also confronted with death . On his first wedding anniversary, which his friends still have to remind him of, he is on call and is promptly called to a murder case. It has long been clear to everyone that the marriage with Gisela has broken down. She is more and more disgusted by Georg's “corpse hands”, all the more when Georg takes her to the crime scene and is confronted with the corpse, the sight of which she cannot cope with.
Cem has a problem of the opposite nature. He works as an interpreter at the court, where he meets the defendant Lale and falls in love with her. Lale, however, is in a relationship. Still, Cem cannot control his emotions. During the trial, he translates the plaintiff's statements to their advantage. He then contacts Lale's friend and pretends to be Lale's brother. With the aim of dividing the two, he threatens him and initially succeeds.
The sales representative Günther actually has nothing to do with this clique , he only lives in the house across from the school and travels a lot for work. So much, however, that his wife Marlies has meanwhile started a relationship with the diving instructor Marcel. When he learns that his company is about to go bankrupt and that he is losing his job, he breaks off his tour and finds his little daughter at home alone, staring at the diving school through the window. This is how Günther learns about his wife's affair.
In this way, the fates of different people are linked and interwoven through the diving school. While Georg and Gisela's marriage cannot be saved after the failed wedding day, Günther succeeds in suppressing his thoughts of revenge , which he initially imagined in his mind's eye when he saw his cheating wife. Cem, on the other hand, has to realize that his rash action was less effective than he had imagined. It is only thanks to his strong, sincere love that he can win Lale's heart in the end. The film shows the different ways in which the characters try to deal with their problems and come to terms with them. The young woman, who runs away from the hospital, but only finds a drug- eaten mother at home , who receives her with reproaches and cold feelings instead of love and sympathy, falls by the wayside. Natalie's second suicide attempt is successful and, as it were, also plunges the doctor Martin into a crisis of meaning , as he feels jointly responsible for her death.
Reviews
“Although most of the episodes are staged with devotion and filled with life by fresh cast members, there is no consistent, compelling moment; Often one would have wished for more time and space to breathe - both for the characters and for the audience. The intention to combine strong characters and fleeting encounters into a drama that is as realistic as it is deeply human can be felt, but is not convincingly implemented. 'Heart' sometimes seems like hard work in which many exciting aspects relating to the 'heart' topic have been brought together without it becoming more than a considerable collection of material. "
“With good pictures that are not obtrusive, the story of Horst Szcerba changes from couple to couple, from family to family. 'Heart' looks almost old-fashioned because its characters are so commonplace. But magical moments bloom again and again, there are flights over the city. Poignant fates such as the young girl who prostitutes herself for alcohol and cigarettes from the nagging, blind mother, lie right next to a silly liver test among friends. And then at some point you are very happy to see real people and not another exaggerated screenplay from Hollywood. "
