Akşehir ( Turkish for white city ) is a city with approx. 94,000 inhabitants and a district of the same name in the Turkish province of Konya in Central Anatolia . Akşehir was known in ancient times and in the Middle Ages under the name Philomelion ( ancient Greek ) and Philomelium ( Latin ). The city's coat of arms shows the humorous figure Nasreddin Hoca sitting upside down on his donkey. Since a regional reform in 2014, the district is identical in terms of area and population to the district town.

geography

Akşehir is located about 15 kilometers south of Akşehir Gölü , a lake in the central Anatolian highlands at the foot of the "Sultan Mountains" (Turkish: Sultan Dağları ) southwest of Akşehir.

history

Türbe of Nasreddin Hoca

The foundation of Akşehir / Philomelion probably goes back to the Macedonian prince Philomelos , who lived in the third century before Christ.

During the time of the Third Crusade , on May 7th 1190, the Akşehir area was the scene of the Battle of Philomelion between the Crusader troops of Frederick I and the Muslim Rum Seljuks . On May 6, 1190, probably in the course of the Battle of Philomelion, the minstrel Friedrich von Hausen died , who fought on the side of the Crusaders.

Akşehir was in its history under the rule of the Rum Seljuks, the Ashraf-Oghullari and the Qaraman-Oghullari . Under Sultan Bayezid I , the Ottomans conquered the city.

In Akşehir there is a historical mausoleum which, according to the inscription, is the Türbe of Ḫoca Nasreddīn  /خواجه نصر الدينis. The traveler Evliya Çelebi visited this tomb and reported on his "trip to the tomb of Hoca Nasreddin". In science it is believed that this could be the tomb of the legendary figure Nasreddin. This assumption and its historical existence are not proven beyond doubt. Since July 5th, 1959, every year from 5th to 10th of July in Akşehir July the Nasreddin Hoca Festival , since July 5th 1974 the International Akşehir Nasreddin Hoca Festival .
