Emirgazi is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Konya . Since a regional reform in 2014 , the municipality ( Belediye ) is congruent with the district (İlçe). All previous villages ( köy ) are now districts ( Mahalle ) of the municipality. The city is located about 120 kilometers east of the provincial capital Konya .

The district is in the east of the province. It borders on Ereğli in the southeast , Karapınar in the southwest , Aksaray Province in the north and Niğde Province in the east . The place is connected by a road with Karapınar in the southwest and with the European route 90 in the northeast. In the south, foothills of the Karacadağ mountain range reach into the district, the only elevation in the otherwise flat area is the Arısama Dağı (also Kale Dağı or Kötü Dağ ) north of the main town with a height of 1446 meters.

history

The Hittite city of Uda is suspected to be near Emirgazi. In the vicinity of Emirgazi around 1904 five altars were found, which were erected by the Hittite great king Tudḫaliya IV . Their hieroglyphic inscriptions name the god-venerated mountain Šarpa, which some researchers identify with the Karacadağ south of Emirgazi and others with the Arısama Dağı north of the place.

If the identification with the Hittite city is correct, ancient Hyde, which was a border town between Cappadocia , Galatia and Lycaonia , was also located here . A Byzantine fortress was later located on Arısama Dağı.
