Çumra is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Konya . Since a regional reform in 2014, the municipality ( Belediye ) is congruent with the district (İlçe). All previous villages ( köy ) are now districts ( Mahalle ) of the municipality. The city is located about 40 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Konya .

The district is located in the south of the province. It borders Güneysınır to the south, Bozkır to the southwest, Akören and Meram to the west, Karatay to the north, Karapınar to the east and Karaman province to the southeast . The main town is connected by two country roads to the southwest and west with the D-715 from Konya to Silifke and to the north with the D-330 from Konya to Ereğli . The Baghdad Railway runs through the city . The highest elevations of the relatively flat district are in the west of the Namdar Tepesi with 1463 meters and the Obrukdağı Tepesi with 1171 meters, in the district town of the Seyithan Tepesi with 1033 meters, in the north of the Domuzboğazlıyan Tepesi with 1426 meters and in the east of the Karahüyük Tepesi with 1035 meters Meters as well as the Bozdağ with a height of 1240 meters. The Çarşamba Çayı , which is dammed up to the lake Apa Barajı in the southwest, flows through the city and the district .

Excavations in Çatalhöyük

The excavations of the prehistoric site Çatalhöyük , which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be viewed about ten kilometers north of the district town . In the southeast of the district lies the late Hittite rock relief at Kızıldağ with a portrait of King Hartapu and several inscriptions in Luwian hieroglyphs on a rock cone .
