Selahattin Göksel Gencer (born July 26, 1974 in Akşehir ; † January 24, 2019 ) was a Turkish football goalkeeper and coach. He is associated with the Samsunspor and Beşiktaş Istanbul clubs . For Beşiktaş he was the 2nd goalkeeper part of the team for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the club, which is seen as legendary, especially in fan circles.

Player career

Gencer began his professional career in the summer of 1993 with the then third division club İçel Polisgücü . With this club football he won the championship in the third division season 1993/94 and thus achieved direct promotion to the 2nd league . For the new season he moved to the first division team Samsunspor and played here for the next eight years, while during this time he was consistently active as a goalkeeper only in the 1999/2000 season.

In the summer of 2002 he moved to the Turkish top club Beşiktaş Istanbul . Here he was a season behind the goalkeeper Óscar Cordoba the second goalkeeper. In the upcoming season his club celebrated its 100th anniversary and so the club management invested a lot in the team. The 2002/03 season you delivered a long championship fight with Galatasaray, which you decided for yourself at the end of the season. This won the Turkish championship. Since Beşiktaş has not been a champion for nine years and it was the championship for the 100th anniversary, this championship had a symbolic meaning for the club and its fans. Gencer completed three league games and one cup game for his club.

In the summer of 2003, Gencer left Beşiktaş and returned to Samsunspor . Here he played for the next one and a half years and moved to the second division Antalyaspor in spring 2005 . He left this club at the end of the season and joined the first division club Manisaspor . After working at Manisaspor, he moved to third division Mersin İdman Yurdu in the summer of 2006 . After he remained without activity in the 2007/08 season, he played the 2007/08 season for third division club Yimpaş Yozgatspor and then ended his active football career in the summer of 2009. He died in January 2019 of complications from a heart attack .

National team

Gencer was nominated for the first time for the Turkish U-21 national team while at İçel Polisgücü and was one of the regularly nominated players for the following two years. He completed a total of ten U-21 internationals.

Coaching career

In the spring of 2011 he took over a position as a junior coach at Türk Telekomspor and worked here with his former teammate İsmet Taşdemir , who worked here as head coach. For the new season he moved in the same position to the first division club Sivasspor .
