The International Garden Show , IGA for short, took place in Rostock in 2003 . Unused fallow land close to the water and the rest of the former village of Schmarl an der Warnow were selected as the location . This gave the planners the chance to create a horticultural exhibition with a connection to water .

aims

Tasks in the planning of the Rostock IGA were the connection of the Warnow tunnel built in the same period , the construction of a new exhibition hall with a conference building, the integration of the traditional ship as a shipbuilding museum into the IGA concept, the re-use as a park area and the improvement of the traffic infrastructure in and around Rostock .

Issuing nations

The following 32 nations were represented with their own gardens at the IGA 2003:

Bolivia , Bulgaria , Germany , Finland , France , Greece , Grand Duchy of Luxembourg , India , Indonesia , Italy , Japan , Kenya , Colombia , North Korea , Croatia , Latvia , Mauritania , Netherlands , Austria , Pakistan , Poland , Switzerland , Slovakia , Spain , South Africa , South Korea , Tanzania , Tunisia , Hungary , United Arab Emirates , Vietnam , People's Republic of China

Finances

The construction and design of the IGA site cost 62 million euros, the exhibition center 32 million euros. Financing was provided by the Hanseatic City of Rostock and the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as the federal government. 2.63 million visitors were counted. The IGA 2003 fulfilled the expectations regarding the function as a magnet for vacationers and tourists. More than half of all visitors did not come from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and a third of them were overnight tourists. Over 50 million euros in additional gross sales thus came to the region. Still, there was a 20 million deficit due to a lack of oversight by the relevant bodies.

275 meetings and congresses with more than 17,000 participants took place during the IGA. 32 nations were represented with some lavish national gardens. 20 National Days were held during the IGA. Attractions and popular with visitors were the national contributions, the cable car , the floating gardens and the changing, lavishly designed 25 hall shows in the exhibition hall.

Many well-attended performances were offered on the IGA Park stages. A total of 1361 events took place over 171 days. The Rostock Volkstheater with 50 performances and the NDR with its open-air events were particularly active here.

Willow Dome

Willow Dome

A novelty was the construction of the willow dome in advance of the IGA. It was considered the largest living structure in the world. The dome height is 15 meters and the length of the structure is 52 meters. The willow dome was designed by the architect Marcel Kalberer. He also managed the construction, which began in 2001 and in which around 650 volunteers from 13 nations were involved. 50 participants lived in the camp to cut, bundle and erect the willow branches and to erect the self-supporting structure.

During the IGA, an average of 300 visitors attended the services on Sundays, and 250 events took place, including three weddings and six baptisms.

All essential green areas and part of the Nations Gardens have been preserved, the park can be used by the public. The accessibility of the fenced area is made more difficult by the location far outside the city center. Events on the IGA Park stage and in the Weidendom will continue to take place. The exhibition hall, on the other hand, did not continue to be used sufficiently in 2009, so that uncovered maintenance costs were still on the city's budget six years after the end of the garden show. In the following years the occupancy rate of the exhibition hall improved noticeably.

The city of Rostock will host the Federal Horticultural Show in 2025 . The IGA park is to become an external location.
