Udo Döhler (born January 4, 1968 in Selb ) is a former German ice hockey goalkeeper who played numerous games in the German ice hockey league with the Frankfurt Lions and the Eisbären Berlin .
Career
Döhler started his career in 1985 in his hometown with VERE Selb in the 2nd League South . After the bankruptcy of Selber, he moved to the Upper Franconian league rivals SV Bayreuth , for which he played all but one league game in three seasons and was twice the preliminary round champion. In 1990, Eintracht Frankfurt finally noticed the goalkeeper and signed him for the team in the 1st Bundesliga. Through the voluntary withdrawal of the Frankfurt team after the season , Döhler came to the Cologne EC , for which he was finally in the can in the 1991/92 season .
With the Frankfurt ESC , he managed to march through from the Oberliga Nord to the German ice hockey league, which was newly founded in 1994 . In 1995 he left the club due to financial problems in Frankfurt and signed on with the Eisbären Berlin , for which he did not concede more than 4.56 goals per game in his first season. After the season and the subsequent Bosman ruling , Döhler stayed with the polar bears, but got only a few appearances in the jersey of the Berliners due to the commitment of Italian-Canadian Mario Brunetta . This did not change with a short change to the Düsseldorfer EG . Despite the few ice ages, “the bull of Selb” - as the polar bear fans called him because of his origins - gained sympathy among the supporters. After a serious injury to Brunetta during the 1998/99 season , the goalie finally made regular appearances, including on international ice. He was honored as the best goalkeeper at the semi-final tournament of the IIHF Continental Cup in Berlin. In his last polar bear season , Döhler was finally appointed national player and was in the goal of the national team at the B World Cup in Poland in 2000 .
After five seasons in the Wellblechpalast , the Franconian moved to local rivals Berlin Capitals together with Lorenz Funk senior in the 2000/01 season . Due to his advancing age, he returned to ESV Bayreuth in 2001 , for which he guarded the gate until 2004 . He completed 154 competitive games and posted four shutouts and a goal average of 3.43 per game.
After a two-year break, Döhler returned to the ice for the 2006/07 season and helped the "Tigers" to the championship in the District League North and promotion to the fifth-class regional league.
International
Born in Selber, he made 15 international appearances in his career, including the success at the B World Cup in Poland in 2000 and the resulting promotion to the A group.
