Jared Coreau (born November 5, 1991 in Perth , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since July 2019 and for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in American Hockey League is used.
Career
Jared Coreau was born in Perth and played in his youth for the Peterborough Stars in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), the secondary junior league of his homeland, after the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Without having been considered in the OHL, the goalkeeper moved to the 2009/10 season for the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior division in the United States. He then enrolled in the fall of 2010 at Northern Michigan University (NMU), where he began studying economics and from then on played for their ice hockey team, the Wildcats , in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Coreau then spent three years at NMU without being selected in an NHL Entry Draft . After the 2012/13 season, the goalkeeper signed a three-year entry contract as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League (NHL).
Coreau began his professional career in the 2013/14 season with the Toledo Walleye from the ECHL and the Grand Rapids Griffins from the American Hockey League (AHL), the two farm teams of the Red Wings. In five AHL and 20 ECHL appearances, the Canadian managed only one victory, with an average of over 4.0 goals conceded and a catch rate of under 88.0% in both leagues . In the following year, Coreau's performance improved significantly, so that he received more playing time in the AHL with 25 appearances and his contract was extended by one year in July 2015. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Coreau rose to become the Griffins goalkeeper and played 47 games in which he achieved six shutouts . In addition, he was appointed to the Red Wings NHL squad twice in the spring of 2016, but without coming to play time there.
After another contract extension for two years in the summer of 2016, the Red Wings called him back to their squad in December 2016, with Coreau finally making his NHL debut. After a brief return to the AHL, the Red Wings brought him back to their squad in late December due to an injury to Jimmy Howard . There Coreau showed convincing performances, so that he partly received more playing time than the nominal number 1, Petr Mrázek . In total, the Canadian came to 14 NHL appearances before returning to the Griffins and won the Calder Cup with them at the end of the season.
After five years in the organization of the Red Wings, the goalkeeper's contract was not renewed at the end of the 2017/18 season, so he joined the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in July 2018 . There he was used exclusively in the AHL with the San Diego Gulls until January 2019 and then handed over to the St. Louis Blues without further consideration . There he ended the season and moved, again as a free agent, to the New York Islanders in July 2019 .
