In the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2013, he was selected by the Lethbridge Hurricanes , for which he was regularly used from the 2014/15 season . In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , Andrew Nielsen was selected in the third round in 65th position by the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he signed a three-year entry - level contract on November 24, 2015 . In Ontario, Nielsen came for the Toronto Marlies , the Maple Leafs farm team , in the American Hockey League (AHL). At the Marlies, Nielsen developed into a regular player, making 74 appearances in the 2016/17 season , followed by 65 games in the following season . At the end of the 2017/18 regular season, the Marlies won the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the best point team in the AHL, before the team also secured the Calder Cup in the subsequent playoffs by beating the Texas Stars in the final .
