Philip Varone (born December 4, 1990 in Vaughan , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League since February 2020 and also for their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , in the American Hockey League plays on the position of the center .
Career
Varone spent his junior years in the Ontario Hockey League between 2007 and 2011 , having previously played for youth teams in his hometown of Vaughan and in Kitchener . In the OHL, the striker was active for three different teams - the Kitchener Rangers , London Knights and Erie Otters - due to numerous transfers . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in the fifth round in 147th position by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League .
Since San Jose had not signed the attacker in the following two years, he moved in September 2011 as a free agent to the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League . Varone was so convincing there that the following spring he received an NHL entry contract through the Buffalo Sabers from the NHL, who were in cooperation with the Amerks . Although the Canadian spent the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons completely in the AHL, he made his NHL debut for Buffalo during the 2013/14 season . With the exception of nine games, they used him again exclusively in the American Hockey League. In the following game year he was then increasingly used in the NHL. However, after he had also spent the 2015/16 season between the NHL and AHL teams, a seven-player transfer deal took place in February 2016 that brought Varone into the Ottawa Senators organization . There he also initially commuted between the NHL squad and the Binghamton Senators farm team .
After the 2016/17 season, his expiring contract in Ottawa was not renewed, so Varone joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2017 . In the jersey of their farm team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms , he then placed second on the AHL scorer list with 70 points and was awarded the Les Cunningham Award as MVP of the regular season and was elected to the AHL First All-Star Team . After two years in Philadelphia, he joined the Canadiens de Montréal in July 2019, again as a free agent . They used him for almost half a year at the Rocket de Laval in the AHL, before he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins with Riley Barber . In return, the Canadiens received Joseph Blandisi and Jacob Lucchini .
