Michiko Hirayama

Michiko Hirayama ( Japanese 平 山 美智子 Hirayama Michiko ; born July 14, 1923 in the city ​​of Tokyo ; † April 1, 2018 in Rome ) was a Japanese singer. She achieved particular fame for her interpretation of Giacinto Scelsi's "Canti del Capricorno". At the age of 82 she took up the full twenty-part cycle of Canti for the first time.

Life

Hirayama was born in Tokyo in 1923, the daughter of two lawyers. She enjoyed a good education. Her first musical influences are attributed to composer Fumio Hayasaka . She studied music at Tokyo University of the Art , in Rome and Salzburg. During her time in Italy in 1957 she made the acquaintance of Giacinto Scelsi, who later dedicated his work "Canti del Capricorno" (1962–1972) to her, and most of whose works she premiered with him. The first joint work "Hô" was premiered in 1961 at the music festival "Nuova Conconanza".

Hirayama has a score of the “Canti del Capricorno” with Scelsi's handwritten notes. She played a crucial role in the creation process of the 20-part musical circle. In 2006, at the age of 82, Hirayama decided to sing the "Canti del Capricorno" again.

Hirayama is famous for her "dirty voice," as she describes it, and her talent for musical improvisation. Your voice spans four octaves.
