From the age of four to five, Daniel Sprong played in a team of twelve and thirteen year olds. In order to better promote the sporting development of their son, the entire family moved to Île Bizard , Québec in 2005 . There Sprong played in the Deux-Rives Dauphins youth program until 2012 . After playing for two other youth teams from 2012 to 2013, the Charlottetown Islanders selected him in the first round in the 2013 LHJMQ Entry Draft in 13th place. In the 2013/14 season Sprong then made his debut in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec and was elected to the all-rookie team of the Canadian top junior league after 73 points scorer in 71 games. The next year he increased his yield to 99 points in 78 games and took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game .

In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , the Pittsburgh Penguins selected him in the second round in 46th place. On August 28, Sprong signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Penguins. In five preparation games he scored two goals and one assist. Due to his good performance, Sprong was not sent back to the LHJMQ and made his National Hockey League debut against the Dallas Stars on October 8, 2015 . This made him only the eighth player in the last two decades to be drafted in the second round or later, and played in the NHL at the age of 18. On October 15, 2015, he scored his first NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators . After 18 games with two goals, Sprong was sent back to the Charlottetown Islanders on December 19, 2015 for more Ice Age. At the end of the 2015/16 season, he was also used in the Penguins' farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , in the playoffs of the American Hockey League (AHL).

After another season in Charlottetown, he switched permanently to the organization of the penguins in the 2017/18 season and was mainly deployed in Wilkes-Barre / Scranton during the season. At the end of his first full AHL season, the attacker was appointed to the AHL All-Rookie Team . At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, the Dutchman was finally in Pittsburgh's regular squad, but was given to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Marcus Pettersson at the beginning of December 2018 . Sprong was active in Anaheim for a little more than a year until he was transferred to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Christian Djoos for the trade deadline in February 2020 .
