Dylan McIlrath (born April 20, 1992 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since March 2017 and for their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in American Hockey League plays in the position of defender .
Career
In the 2007 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League , McIlrath was selected in 46th place by the Moose Jaw Warriors . He made his debut in the WHL in the 2008/09 season , in which he scored four points in 53 games. Warriors also went on hold in the following two seasons and made a name for himself above all with his physically fit game. In three years in the WHL, the defender received 460 penalty minutes. In 2010 he took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game for Team Orr and was selected tenth by the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft . In March 2011, he then signed a contract with the Rangers and then completed two games for the Rangers farm team , the Connecticut Whale , in the American Hockey League .
In the 2012/13 season he played his first full season for the Whale in the AHL. He also spent most of the following year in Connecticut before he was called up to the Rangers squad for the first time in December 2013 and made his debut in the top division of North America in the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets . A few days later, McIlrath played his first fist fight in the NHL in his second mission against the Calgary Flames after he clashed with enforcer Brian McGrattan . After another season, most of which the defender spent in the AHL, he was able to recommend himself for the Rangers squad during preparation in the summer of 2015 and has received regular appearances in the NHL since the beginning of the 2015/16 season . In December 2015 he scored his first goal in the blueshirt jersey against the Edmonton Oilers .
After more than five years in the Rangers organization, McIlrath was handed over to the Florida Panthers in November 2016 , who in return sent Steven Kampfer to New York. Even there he could not prevail in the episode and played with the exception of five NHL games exclusively for the Springfield Thunderbirds in the AHL. As part of the trade deadline in early March 2017, it was handed over to the Detroit Red Wings together with a conditional third-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Thomas Vanek moved to Florida. With the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Red Wings, he then won the AHL playoffs for the Calder Cup .
Style of play
McIlrath is considered a defender who, due to his stature, excels in tackling hardness and physique and whose primary tasks are in the defensive area. As a result of his physical style of play, he regularly gets into fist fights and often has a high number of penalty minutes. He has a hard slap shot and is therefore sometimes given times in overpaying situations. The Canadian continues to show deficits in terms of his skills in skating and defensive positional play. McIlrath himself describes established NHL defenders like Shea Weber and Travis Hamonic as his playful role models.
Achievements and Awards
- 2010 CHL Top Prospects Game
