Robbie Victor Russo (born February 15, 1993 in Westmont , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League since June 2018 and for their farm team , the Tucson Roadrunners , in the American Hockey League plays on the position of defender .

Career

Russo played during his junior years between 2007 and 2009 first in the state of Illinois for the Chicago Mission in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League . For the 2009/10 season, the then 16-year-old moved to the National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey , for which he played nationally in the United States Hockey League for the next two seasons , but also represented internationally. At the end of his two-year engagement there, he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2011 in 95th place by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League . Initially, however, the defense attorney enrolled at the University of Notre Dame and pursued a degree over the next four years. At the same time, he played for the college's ice hockey team - first in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and later in Hockey East - both divisions in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . There he found himself in the all-rookie team of the CCHA at the end of the 2011/12 season and won the CCHA division championship with the university. In the 2014/15 season, the defender was appointed to the First All-Star Team of Hockey East and the East Second All-American Team of the NCAA. He made sure of that with 41 scorer points in 40 season games. Russo's offensive performance had already developed positively in the previous year, but due to his grades at the university he was banned from playing from January 2014 until the end of the season.

Since the New York Islanders had not been able to sign the offensive defender after the draft four years earlier until the summer of 2015, he finally signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings in August 2015 as a free agent . Until March 2017 , the Wings only used Russo in their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League . There he made the leap into the All-Rookie Team and Second All-Star Team of the league after his rookie season . In March 2017, the defender made his debut in Detroit's NHL squad and made 19 appearances before returning to the Griffins and winning the AHL playoffs for the Calder Cup with them .

After the 2017/18 season, which he had spent exclusively in Grand Rapids, the Red Wings handed him over to the Arizona Coyotes in June 2018 and received a conditional seven-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft .

International

For his home country, Russo played at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 and the U18 Junior World Championship in 2011 . In both tournaments he won the gold medal with the Americans. To win the world title, he contributed eight scorer points in six tournament games.
