Ivano Zanatta (born August 3, 1960 in Toronto , Ontario ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey coach, official and former player. He was an Italian international and has been assistant coach at HK Sochi in Russia since May 2017 . His sons Michael , Luca and Alessandro also played internationally for Italy.

career

Zanatta was born in Toronto, Canada to a family from Veneto . From 1984 until the end of his career in 1996 he played in Italy: first for SG Cortina , then for HC Devils Milano and finally for AS Varese . With the Devils Milano he was Italian champion in 1992, 1993 and 1994. As a member of the Italian national team, he took part in the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville and in world championships.

The Italian-Canadian stayed in the ice hockey business after his playing career and became a coach. From 1996 to 1998 he was head coach in Cortina and then held this position from 1998 to 2000 in Milan. In 1999, Zanatta joined HC Lugano in the Swiss NLA as an assistant coach . In 2003 he won the Swiss championship in this role with the South Ticino team. In spring 2006, Lugano's head coach Larry Huras was dismissed during the playoffs, and Zanatta then led the team to the championship title together with Huras' successor Harold Kreis . Kreis then switched to the ZSC Lions , Zanatta stayed in Lugano and became the new head coach. 2006/07 eliminated the Bianconeri under Zanatta's leadership in the quarter-finals of the NLA championship round. In December 2007, Zanatta was removed from his position after four defeats in a row, but initially stayed with the club before his contract was canceled in spring 2008.

Zanatta moved to the Continental Hockey League (KHL) and became assistant coach at the Russian club SKA St. Petersburg . After the dismissal of head coach Barry Smith , he took over his position in the spring of 2010. He was released in October of the same year. From 2012 to 2014 Zanatta was an assistant coach on the staff of HC Lev Prague (then KHL). He worked as a manager for the Italian association before he was hired as sports director by the NLA club HC Ambrì-Piotta in spring 2015 . In April 2017, he was replaced in this post by Paolo Duca .

For the 2017/18 season he moved to HK Sotschi in the KHL, where he took over the position of assistant coach.
