Michael Angelo Zanatta (born May 31, 1989 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada ) is an Italian - Swiss ice hockey player who has been under contract with SG Cortina from the Alps Hockey League since 2017 . His father Ivano was also an Italian international. His younger brothers Luca and Alessandro also played internationally for Italy.

Career

Michael Zanatta began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of HC Lugano . After he had spent the 2006/07 season with the Notre Dame Hounds in the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League, a lower-tier Canadian junior league, he returned to Lugano, where he was mainly used in the junior division, but also for his first appearances in 2007 the National League A came. In addition to appearances for his home club, he also played for the EHC Basel (National League A and National League B ) and HC Ceresio from the 1st league, the highest Swiss amateur class, until 2009 . In 2009 he moved to the NLB club HC Ajoie , which he left again in January of the following year to end the season with the Innisfil Lakers from the Canadian Junior League GMHL. In the summer of 2010 he returned to Europe and played for SG Cortina in the Italian Serie A for the next four years , where he and his team won the Italian Cup in 2012 . He has been back in Switzerland since 2014, now with the second division HC Red Ice Martigny-Verbier . In 2017 the club from the canton of Valais was declared bankrupt. Zanatta then returned to SG Cortina, which now plays in the Alps Hockey League .

International

In the junior division, Zanatta played for the Swiss youth, but was not used at world championships. This enabled him to compete for the Italian selection in the adult area . After making international appearances for the first time in the 2012/13 season, he took part in the Division I World Championships in 2015 and 2016 .
