The Gielsdorf water tower in the Alfter district of Gielsdorf was built around the turn of the century . The brick tower (address: Auf der Heide ) is "testimony to the history of the public and central water supply" and is a listed building.

history

The 14 meter high tower was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Built in the 19th century by the Deutz engine works in Cologne . In 1907, the company also built a somewhat higher, but otherwise structurally identical, tower in neighboring Brenig . Both towers could store 72,000 liters of water. The Gielsdorfer Tower supplied up to 1200 households. In 1972 it was shut down.

Since the shutdown, several usage concepts for the unused tower have been discussed, none of which have been implemented, including the establishment of a youth center, a café, a taxi center and a clubhouse. In 2002 the Cologne management consultant Alexander Lichtenberg acquired the building for a symbolic price from the municipality. Lichtenberg had already bought some water towers in East Germany and Poland as well as the Breniger water tower and put them to economic use. The sale was made to renovate the water tower. According to estimates by the Alfter building authority, the renovation costs were 46,000 euros; Work should begin by 2009 at the latest. The purchaser's concept envisaged the renovation of the tower and the addition of a residential and office unit. The village square should be relocated for this; the community agreed. After the construction work did not start even after the deadline was extended until the end of 2010, the municipality took legal action against Lichtenberg in 2011. On August 13, 2013, the tower was foreclosed on for EUR 36,000.
