Mike Schmidt (born May 23, 1961 in Palmerston , Ontario ) is a former German - Canadian ice hockey player ( defender ) and was assistant coach of Adler Mannheim between 2010 and 2013 .

Player career

His first position as a player in Germany was for the German-Canadian Schmidt at Hamburger SV , from which he moved to Berliner SC for the 1980/81 season at the age of 19 . He played in Berlin for two years. However, the BSC withdrew its team from the ice hockey Bundesliga due to bankruptcy . Schmidt then moved to Mannheim ERC for two years , where a number of other Canadians brought from overseas with German ancestors such as Harold Kreis , Roy Roedger and Manfred 'Mannix' Wolf played. The Düsseldorfer EG, which stabilized in the early 80s after lean years in sport, secured Schmidt's services for the 1984/85 season . Schmidt stayed with the club for nine years, supported by further player commitments such as striker Chris Valentine , who was signed in the same year, defenders Ulrich Hiemer , Andreas Niederberger and Rick Amann , as well as his former Mannheim team-mates Roedger and Wolf and a few years later Gerd Truntschka and Dieter Hegen knocked on the door of the German Championship. In 1990 the time had come, after a 15-year break, the championship went back to Düsseldorf . Schmidt managed to defend the title three times.

However, an offer from EC Hedos Munich made him break up his tent at DEG and hire him in Munich. Here he met his former DEG colleagues Hegen and Truntschka. Immediately in his first season with Hedos he was again German champion. His second season with the club, now renamed Maddogs Munich, did not last long, the club went bankrupt early on. The players were mostly distributed among other clubs in the league, Mike Schmidt went to Cologne for the Cologne EC , who needed the defender position. Here, too, he managed to become German champions with his team, now for the sixth time in a row, which with the exception of various players from EV Füssen in the 1950s and the Berlin ice skating club in the 1920s and 1930s (including Gustav Jaenecke ) never did one player succeeded. For the 1995/96 season he let his career at SC Riessersee end.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Schmidt turned to coaching. His first stop was the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , where he acted as Bob Murdoch's assistant coach for two years from the beginning of the 2000/01 season . After Murdoch's dismissal, he moved to the position of head coach for the first time, but could not convince the club management to continue working with him despite a successful season. His next station was the Hamburg Freezers , here again as assistant to long-time NHL coach Dave King . But King was also dismissed, so that Schmidt again held the main coaching function.

Although the Freezers were eliminated again in the quarter-finals of the play-offs, they were able to convince in the six games against the DEG Metro Stars team, which also made it into the final, so Schmidt signed a contract as a coach for the season 2006/07 . There he was released early on November 25, 2006 and replaced by Bill Stewart (Mannheim / Krefeld). During the same season he switched to the ERC Ingolstadt coaching staff due to Ron Kennedy's illness .

From the 2007/08 season , Schmidt worked as an assistant trainer at his long-term club, the DEG Metro Stars , initially as an assistant to head coach Slavomír Lener . After a disappointing performance, he was dismissed during the current season. Schmidt continued his office in the two following years, however, with the new head coach Harold Kreis .

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , the coaching duo switched to Adler Mannheim . During the current 2013/2014 season , Adler Mannheim and Harold Kreis parted amicably on December 31, 2013 after repeated defeats. In this context, Mike Schmidt also left the organization.
