Volvo 400 series
The 400 series from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo comprises a series of vehicles that are counted in the compact class . The 400 series includes the following three models:
- Volvo 440 (hatchback; 1988–1996), a total of 384,682 units produced
- Volvo 460 (notchback; 1989–1996), a total of 238,401 units produced
- Volvo 480 ( Shooting Break ; 1986–1995), a total of 76,375 units produced
As the first model in the series, Volvo presented the Volvo 480 to the press in 1985 . Production started a year later.
The car of the series 400 are the first Volvo with front wheel drive and transversely installed four-cylinder engines in series.
The development of the Volvo 400 series began in 1978 under the project name E12. It was produced in Born (Limburg) in the Netherlands .
1979 joined Volvo and Renault an agreement on industrial cooperation. As for Daf since the 1960s and then for the Volvo 343 , Renault also supplied the engines for the 400 series.
The Volvo 480 was the first car to go into series production with a bonnet made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic with a honeycomb core and a radiator grille under the bumper .
Successor models were the Volvo S40 and V50.
