The GIJS Groningen ( Groninger IJshockey Stichting ) is a Dutch ice hockey club from Groningen . The team played until 2010 as one of nine teams in the country's highest class, the Eredivisie . She currently plays in the second-rate first division .

history

The Kardinge Sports Center, home of the club

The club was founded on December 23, 1969 as Groninger IJshockey Stichting (GIJS) and played in the lower divisions of the Netherlands until 1976. 1976 succeeded the promotion to the Eredivisie , the highest national league. In the 1985/86 season, the team won the Dutch championship title for the first and so far only time .

Due to a lack of sponsorship income, the club withdrew from the Eredivisie in 1988 and from then on played in the country's top amateur league, the Eerste divisie . In 2006 and 2007, the Grizzlies won the championship of this league and rose again in 2007 to the Eredivisie. With Sergei Yashin as coach, the team occupied mostly lower places in the table in the following three years and only won a single game in the 2009/10 season. Due to this failure and falling audience numbers, the club withdrew again from the Eredivisie in the summer of 2010. The team is currently taking part in the games of the second-rate first division under its old name GIJS Bears Groningen .
