He was in sociology at the University of Bonn in 2002 graduated with the case study imagery and real life . A sociological study on the role of private photos in the meaningfulness of one's own life .

Then he was between 2006 and 2008 research assistant at the Karlsruhe University of Education and the Institute for Regional Studies of the University of Karlsruhe .

In 2008 Selke became professor for "Media Sociology" at the Furtwangen University , since 2011 for the subject "Social Change". Since 2015 he has also been a research professor for “Transformative and Public Science” and is concerned with new models for the co-production of knowledge and public sociology . In addition, he taught at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology from 2008 to 2014 and was a visiting lecturer at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Salzburg in 2015 .

Selke is the author of books and articles in national and international journals as well as the editor of scientific anthologies. He also gives lectures and, as a publicly effective sociologist, is a frequent guest on numerous television and radio programs.

Scientific focus

His main areas of research include the topics of poverty economics and social sustainability (especially the theme of " panels in Germany"), Transformative and Public Science (particularly Public Sociology), Social change, social transformations, social and diagnoses, social utopias and social innovation as well as digitization in healthcare (especially lifelogging and self-tracking).

In the research field of poverty economics, Selke dealt intensively with food tables in Germany. He became known to a broader public, especially between 2008 and 2013, as a critic of the so-called "Tafel movement". To this end, a demonstration took place together with people affected by poverty in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. This action was exhibited in the House of History in 2018 as an example of organic public sociology.

In essence, Selke criticizes the lack of social sustainability of the help given to food banks, which only cares for the poor. He demands that the food banks must question themselves in order to prevent an irreversible perpetuation of poverty supply without structural poverty reduction. With the book Schamland. Poverty in the Middle of Us (2013), Selke presented an extensive social study on food banks, soup kitchens, social department stores and similar institutions that alleviate poverty.
