history

The Belgian ice hockey league was first played in 1912. Since then there have been several interruptions in game operations. For the first time, the league paused due to the First World War from 1914 to 1920. The next break was due to the global economic crisis and thus the game was again canceled in the years 1929 to 1934. For the third and last time no ice hockey was played in Belgium's top ice hockey division in the 1994/95 season . Of the seven teams that played in the Belgian Ice Hockey League in the 2013/14 season, six came from the Dutch-speaking part of the country and one from the French-speaking part.

Champion in the 2008/09 season was the HYC Herentals . They had to admit defeat in the final of the 2009/10 season against the Chiefs Leuven , who celebrated their second championship title that season. In the 2010/11 season, the Belgian ice hockey league was not played. The two Belgian teams White Caps Turnhout and HYC Herentals took part in the North Sea Cup of the Dutch association and played out the Belgian champions in a best-of-seven round after it was over. In 2011/12 the Chiefs Leuven also took part in the North Sea Cup and the three teams played the honor division.

For the 2012/13 season, HYC Herentals was accepted into the Dutch honor division . The Belgian ice hockey league has been increased by the clubs of the previous second division. Then the number of teams was reduced back to seven. The champions of the 2013/14 season were the Bulldogs de Liège, the only team from Wallonia. The team from Liège is the first national champion since the Brussels Royal IHSC 1982 that is not from Flanders. The honor division was replaced in 2015 by the Belgian-Dutch BeNe League .
