Special occurrences

The season was marked by rioting and violence. In the game of the Buffalos from Liège against the Griffoens Geel, the referee was hit in the eye by a spectator, after which the Buffalos had to play all their remaining games away. In the semifinals between Brussels and Geel, the players Hans Horemans , Serge Lauzon , Kurt Weddingen and Johan van Springel of the Griffoens were sent off by the referee and the game was stopped a good eight minutes before the end. Geel won the third game against the Buffalos with 10: 7, but was subsequently excluded by the disciplinary committee. This banned Horemans for two years, Lauzon for 16 and van Springel and Weddingen for twelve games. Coach Guy van Gelder will be suspended for six games. A further 15 players will be banned for six games, including young players who only sat on the bench and Jouni Heinonen , who broke his wrist in the first third and was no longer there at the time of the riots. Despite these sometimes draconian penalties, Geel was initially allowed to take part in the final, but the referee stopped the first final game after almost twelve minutes of playing time, which took over an hour, because the game was torpedoed by only nine Geeler players. Thereupon the association excluded the Griffoens Geel from further game operations and pulled the team from Brussels, which had won the first game for third place against HYC Herentals, into the final. In the end, however, this was only played as a friendly game and the team from Heist op den Berg was declared champions due to the main round success.
