The Newcastle North Stars are a semi-professional Australian ice hockey club from Newcastle , New South Wales that was founded in 1981 and plays in the Australian Ice Hockey League . The North Stars are Australian record champions.

history

The Newcastle North Stars were founded in 1981. Until it was accepted into the Australian Ice Hockey League , the top division in the country, as part of the league expansion in 2002, the club played exclusively at the local level. The North Stars, who are Australian record champions with five titles, reached the playoff finals in every season from 2002 to 2008 and also won the Goodall Cup , which the Australian champions received in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 . Only in 2004 and 2007 Newcastle lost the final. In 2004 and 2009 they won at least the VIP Cup as the best team of the regular season. After the VIP Cup was replaced by the H Newman Reid Trophy for the 2010 season, the North Stars were able to win this right away as champions of the regular season. In 2015, after a five-year break, they were able to win the H Newman Reid Trophy as the winner of the main round for the first time and then celebrate their fifth Goodall Cup success with a 3-2 win after extra time against Melbourne Ice . The North Stars also won the Goodall Cup in 2016.
