Matthew Ezzy (born January 2, 1984 in Lismore , New South Wales , Australia ) is a former Australian ice hockey goalkeeper who spent most of his career with the Newcastle North Stars in the Australian Ice Hockey League .

Career

Matthew Ezzy began his career as a hockey player with the Gold Coast Grizzlies. In 2002 he moved to Canada, where he initially guarded the gate for a year with the Smith Falls Bears in the Central Canada Hockey League. He then stood at the London Nationals in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League on the ice. In 2004 he returned to Australia and played until his retirement in 2011 with the Newcastle North Stars in the Australian Ice Hockey League . With his team he won the Goodall Cup , the Australian championship , in 2005, 2006 and 2008 . As master of the main round, he won the VIP Cup with the North Stars in 2004 and 2009 and the successor trophy H Newman Read Trophy in 2010 . In 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 he was elected Goalkeeper of the Year of the AIHL.

During the break in the summer in the southern hemisphere, he sometimes played for clubs in the northern hemisphere, where it was then winter. He was active in the 2004/05 season for the Aurora Tigers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Welland Junior Canadians in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. In 2006/07 he went to Europe for the first time and guarded the gate at the KHK Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian ice hockey league. Two years later he was in the can with the Utrecht Rheem Racers in the Dutch honor division .

International

For Australia , Ezzy was in the junior division at the U18 World Junior Championship of the Asia-Oceania Division 2001 in goal.

In the men's area, he participated with the Australian team in the World Championships in Division I of 2009 and Division II in 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2010 and 2011 . In 2005, 2006 and 2008 he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament and in 2008 he also had the best catch rate and the lowest goalscoring average of all goalkeepers in the tournament. In 2010 (behind the Spaniard Ander Alcaine ) and 2011 (behind the New Zealander Richard Parry ) he finished the tournament with the second best catch rate and in 2011 also with the second lowest goal against (behind Parry).
