Thomas "Tom" Watkins (born March 6, 1978 in Durham , England ) is a British ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Telford Tigers again since 2010 and has played with the club since 2017 in the National Ice Hockey League . He is also a coach and general manager of the club since 2017. His younger brothers Ben , Joe and Jack are or were also professional ice hockey players. Joe Watkins was also a UK international.
Career
Tom Watkins for the Sunderland Tomahawks, for whom he played in the English U19 league. In 1995/06 he played for the Newcastle Warriors in the British Hockey League and the lower class Billingham Bombers. In 1996 he first joined the Telford Tigers , with whom he played for three years in what was then the British National League . After spending the 1999/2000 season with league rivals Peterborough Pirates and Hull Thunder , he moved to Coventry Blaze , who also played in the BNL at the time. In 2003 he won the league with the team from the West Midlands . He then moved with his team to the Elite Ice Hockey League , the strongest British league. There he won the main round with Coventry straight away and thus also the British championship , the playoffs and the Challenge Cup. In 2007 the championship and the Challenge Cup could be won again, but in the league playoffs they were eliminated in the semifinals against the Cardiff Devils . In 2008, the third British championship and success in the Knockout Cup followed. After the fourth championship was won in 2010, Watkins left the club and rejoined the Telford Tigers, with whom he first played in the English Premier Ice Hockey League . After the league was dissolved, he moved with the Tigers in 2017 to the National Ice Hockey League , whose playoffs he won with the club in 2018.
International
In the junior division Watkins stood for Great Britain at the U18-C European Championships in 1995 and 1996 and the U20-C World Championship in 1997 on the ice.
With the British men's national team , Watkins played at the World Championships in Division I in 2007 , 2008 and 2009 .
Trainer
Since returning to Telford in 2010, Watkins has worked there as a coach alongside his active career. In addition to his work as a player-coach, he has also been the general manager of the club since 2017. Since 2011 he has also worked for the British Association , where he acted as assistant coach for both the men's national team and the U20 team . At the U20 World Cup in 2016 was the head coach of the British Juniors.
