Darcy Mitani (born October 17, 1973 in Dryden , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player with Japanese citizenship who played most of his career for the Nippon Paper Cranes in the Japan Ice Hockey League and the Asia League Ice Hockey .
Career
Darcy Mitani, who began his career with Dryden MHA in his hometown, played from 1990 to 1992 with the Thunder Bay Flyers in the United States Hockey League , the most important junior league in the United States. While studying at the University of North Dakota , he played for the Fighting Sioux College Team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In 1996 he moved to the East Coast Hockey League with the Charlotte Checkers , but in the spring of 1997 he moved to the league rivals Wheeling Nailers , with whom he reached the playoffs, where, however, they lost 3 0: 3 in the first round against the Peoria Rivermen .
Then Mitani, who has Japanese ancestors, moved to the Nippon Paper Cranes in the Japan Ice Hockey League . He was the third best scorer in the league in 1999 and 2000. From 2004 he played with the Cranes in the Asia League ice hockey and was able to win it in 2004, 2007 and 2009. In 2005 he was the top scorer and best assist provider. In addition to the successes in the Asia League, Mitani won the All Japan Ice Hockey Championship with the team from Kushiro in 2006, 2007 and 2010 . In 2010 he moved to Korea for Asia League rivals High1 , where he won the Korea Domestic Championship , the South Korean ice hockey cup, in 2012. When he ended his career in 2012, he was the top scorer in the Asia League with 372 points in 274 games
International
Darcy Mitani, who is a Canadian-Japanese dual national, took part in the 2008 World Cup for Japan in Division I and was the best scorer of his team with six points (including four goals). He also represented the East Asians in the Olympic qualification for the Winter Games in Vancouver 2010 .
