Rolf Arne Edberg (born September 29, 1950 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League from 1966 to 1985 .
Career
Rolf Edberg began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Hammarby IF , for whose professional team he was active from 1966 to 1970. With his team he rose in the 1967/68 season in Division 1, the highest Swedish league, on, but had to accept with his team the immediate relegation to Division 2. From 1970 to 1978, the center played for AIK Solna , for which he was initially active in Division 1 and from the 1975/76 season in the successor league Elitserien . With AIK he was runner- up in the 1977/78 season. He himself contributed to this success with 19 scorer points, seven of which were goals, in a total of 29 games. In the same season he was elected to the Swedish All-Star Team and received the gold puck as the best Swedish player of the year.
On June 10, 1978 Edberg was taken as a free agent by the Washington Capitals , for which he was on the ice for the following three seasons in the National Hockey League . During this period he scored 103 scorer points in 184 games, 45 of them goals. He then returned to his Swedish homeland and was Swedish champion with his ex-club AIK Solna in the 1981/82 season after his return . The Swede last played from 1983 to 1985 for his hometown club Hammarby IF, with whom he rose to the Elitserien in the 1983/84 season and had to accept immediate relegation in the 1984/85 season . He then ended his career at the age of 34.
International
For Sweden , Edberg only took part in the junior division at the U19 European Junior Championship in 1969 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1977 , 1978 and 1979 World Championships . He won the silver medal at the 1977 World Cup and the bronze medal at the 1979 World Cup.
