Three places in the women's Olympic ice hockey tournament were awarded in qualifying games. The qualification should be held in three tournaments with four teams each. The teams in positions 5 to 16 of the IIHF world rankings after the 2004 World Cup were eligible to participate . However, since North Korea and Denmark , as 15th and 16th in the ranking, waived and only Slovenia was willing to move up from the following teams as 26th in the ranking, the qualifying games took place with only eleven teams. The three group winners of the qualifying tournaments were qualified for the Olympics.

The International Ice Hockey Federation formed a ranking among the non-qualified nations that was also included in the 2006 IIHF world rankings .
