Momme (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Momme ( Japanese or 文 目 ), also Monme or Me ( ), was a unit of weight and quantity in the Japanese Shakkanhō system.

Weight unit

The measure was also used as a silk weight beyond Japan . Momme corresponds to the Chinese measure Tschih / Tsien.

  • 1 momme = 10 fun = 3.75 grams
  • 4 momme = 1 ryome
  • 160 momme = 1 kin (Japanese pound ) = 600 grams
  • 1 drachm (Avoirdupois) = 0.4725 momme
  • 1 ounce (avoirdupois) = 7.5599 momme
  • 1 pound (avoirdupois) = 120,958 momme

In practical use of the measure, the weight of the silk was calculated on the basis of a square meter . The momme, when adjusted, was about 4.31 grams per square meter. The piece of silk was woven in the simple taffeta or linen weave and labeled pongé . This name was taken as a measure of fineness for silk fabric and the appended number had to be multiplied by the momme weight per square meter. Example: With Pongee 4, the square meter of silk is about 17.24 grams.
