Galina Jurjewna Skiba ( Russian Галина Юрьевна Скиба ; born May 9, 1984 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract at the HK Tornado in the Shenskaya Hockey League since 2006 .

Career

Galina Skiba was born in Kharkiv in 1984 and later moved to Belgorod with her family . At the age of 6, Skiba started figure skating , but a year later she moved to the ice hockey department of the local sports club, becoming the first female ice hockey player in Belgorod.

In 2002 she moved to Moscow with her brother to continue her ice hockey career. She received an offer from SKIF Moscow and accepted it. One year after joining SKIF in 2003, Skiba joined the Russian national team. She played for SKIF until 2006 and was three times Russian champion during this time.

In the summer of 2003, a central ice hockey club for Russian women's ice hockey was founded - the HK Tornado Moskowskaja Oblast . With this she received a contract in 2006. With the HK Tornado she won the Russian championship several times as well as the IIHF European Women Champions Cup three times .

International

She has been a regular player in the Russian national team since 2004 and took part in two Olympic ice hockey tournaments with them. In both participations ( 2006 and 2014 ) she took sixth place with the national team. She also won two bronze medals at world championships (2013 and 2016).

Because of doping at the 2014 Olympic Games, she was suspended for life by the IOC in December 2017 and the tournament placement was canceled.
