The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Center is a multi-purpose hall on the campus of the University of British Columbia in the University Endowment Lands of the Canadian city of Vancouver , British Columbia . The sports arena used to be called UBC Thunderbird Arena or UBC Winter Sports Center .

history

The interior of the hall

Construction began in April 2006 and, following completion in summer 2008, was opened on July 7th of that year. On August 21, 2009, the venue was named after Doug Mitchell, a UBC lawyer and alumni who promotes the university's ice hockey. During the 2010 Winter Olympics , the arena next to the served Canada Hockey Place as the second venue for the ice hockey competitions of men and women , also were Sledge hockey tournaments of the 2010 Winter Paralympics held in Winter Sports Center. The arena offers a total of 7,500 spectators and includes three ice rinks , one of which is to be used exclusively for training purposes. The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Center is located on the site of the former Thunderbird Winter Sport Complex and is approximately eight miles from the 2010 Olympic Village, making it easy to get to by public transport, according to the organizers.

After the Olympic Games, the hall will continue to be used for college and club sports.

Davis Cup

The Canadian Davis Cup team played their home games in 2012 and 2013 (first round in 2012 and 2013 and quarter-finals in 2013) in the UBC Thunderbird Arena on hard court.
