The Muonio älv [ ˈmuɔniɔ ɛlv ] ( Swedish ) or Muonionjoki [ ˈmuɔniɔnjɔki ] ( Finnish ) is a river in Lapland .
It arises near the town of Markkina through the confluence of the Könkämäneno and Lätäseno and flows after 230 kilometers near Pajala into the Torne älv ( Tornionjoki ), which flows into the Gulf of Bothnia at Tornio . Together with the Könkämäneno and Torne älv, it forms the border between Sweden and Finland .
At Kolari the river island Kolarinsaari is surrounded by the two arms of the Muonio älv. The left tributary of the Ylläsjoki flows into the eastern arm of the river .
